According to Greg Cipolaro, global head of research at NYDIG, a roughly $1.3 billion block trade in BlackRock's spot Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) last week was executed below market price. The seller gave up millions of dollars in spread to achieve immediate execution—a telltale sign of a large directional holder exiting a trade.

Cipolaro stressed that the operation was distinct from normal portfolio rebalancing or liquidity management. Instead, it strongly indicated that a whale with a sizable directional position was closing it out. Directional trades, which involve taking a long or short view on price, tend to leave visible footprints when unwound in such scale, even in a deep ETF market.
IBIT is one of the most liquid spot Bitcoin ETFs, and a discounted megatrade of this magnitude is uncommon. The event was quickly read as a definitive signal of whale positioning, underscoring how large participant activity can directly impact ETF pricing.
