International crude futures fell sharply early in the new trading week after markets began pricing in the possibility of a fresh round of talks between the United States and Iran. As of 7 p.m. Eastern Time on Aug. 2, the September contract for light sweet crude on the New York Mercantile Exchange had fallen to an intraday low of $74.78 a barrel, down $5.89, or 6.96%, from the previous session’s close. The October Brent crude contract in London dropped to a low of $81.55 a barrel, down $6.38, or 7.26%. The move followed comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who told reporters aboard Air Force One on the afternoon of Aug. 2 that the United States would hold talks with Iran the next day. One day earlier, Trump had announced that a planned military strike on Iran had been called off. The news item was carried by Xinhua and republished by Odaily.
