OKX’s X Layer has rolled out Exchange OS, a protocol upgrade that lets developers and institutions launch custom trading venues. The first venue is set to test 2026 World Cup outcome markets in June.

OKX’s Ethereum-compatible Layer 2 network X Layer has introduced Exchange OS, a new protocol layer that allows developers, institutions, and ecosystem teams to launch their own trading venues. The system supports spot markets, perpetual markets, and outcome markets, while using infrastructure connected to OKX’s exchange stack. Matching, margining, liquidation, settlement, and risk controls are pushed closer to the protocol layer.

X Layer said the upgrade is built to tackle what it described as a core structural problem in on-chain finance: fragmented infrastructure. Exchange OS gives venue operators room to define their own listed assets, oracle setup, revenue model, market structure, and compliance framework. A regulated institution can build a KYC-enabled venue on the same shared rails that a Web3-native team could use for a permissionless market.

Venue deployment requires OKB staking

Before launching a venue, deployers must stake OKB in the X Layer Staking Contract, according to the team. Earlier reporting said OKB became the only gas token and native token on X Layer as OKX moved deeper into its migration plan for the network. That makes OKB staking part of the venue creation path under Exchange OS.

First launch will test 2026 World Cup outcome trading

The first venue built with Exchange OS is scheduled to go live in June. It will debut with “2026 World Cup Outcomes,” a simulated outcome market focused on events tied to the 2026 World Cup. X Layer said it wants to build on the system internally before opening the framework more broadly to other market creators.

OKX’s Outcomes FAQ describes outcome trading as an event contract product in which users buy Yes or No shares linked to real-world events. Current coverage is centered on World Cup-related events. The FAQ also notes that references to FIFA do not imply endorsement by FIFA.

Rollout follows recent X Layer expansion

The Exchange OS release comes after several other additions across X Layer. In January, Uniswap went live on the network, giving users access to swaps, liquidity provision, and native markets such as xBTC, USDT, and USDG through its app, wallet, and API. In March, Aave launched on X Layer, enabling OKX Wallet users to lend, borrow, and earn yield directly on the chain.

That earlier report said X Layer had around $25 million in total value locked when Aave launched. OKX has also been adding payment infrastructure around the network. A recent report said its Payment SDK lets developers integrate one-time, batch, and pay-as-you-go transactions on X Layer with low or zero gas costs.
