OpenAI officially announced the Stargate Project on January 23, 2025, a $500 billion infrastructure initiative aimed at accelerating the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) within the United States.
Investment and Founding Partners
The project is a new company founded by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. SoftBank will take financial responsibility, while OpenAI will oversee operations. The total investment of $500 billion is scheduled over four years, with $100 billion to be deployed immediately. Construction has already begun on data center campuses in Texas, with potential expansion to other states.
Technical Partners and Initial Goals
Key technology partners include Arm, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle, and OpenAI. The initial phase aims to build 10 mega data centers, with plans to expand to over 20 sites. These facilities are designed to provide the massive computing power required for OpenAI's AGI research, which seeks to create AI systems that surpass human capabilities across a wide range of tasks.
Economic and Strategic Significance
OpenAI stated that the project will not only support the re-industrialization of the United States but also provide strategic capability to protect national security and that of its allies. It expects to create hundreds of thousands of American jobs and generate massive economic benefits globally. President Donald Trump, who attended the official announcement, commented: 'China is a competitor, and others are competitors. We want it to be in this country, and we’re making it available. We have to get this stuff built.'
Previous Fundraising Context
In October 2024, OpenAI raised $6.6 billion at a $157 billion valuation to boost its computing power. The Stargate Project represents the next leap in AI infrastructure investment, positioning the U.S. as the leader in the global AI race.
