OpenAI said it stopped an organized campaign in which more than 15,000 accounts tried to copy the hidden reasoning capabilities of its models. The company linked part of the activity to individuals associated with Moonshot AI, according to Techub, which cited The Decoder. Researchers, however, found that the same attack method remained effective for weeks on Microsoft Azure, including against the newer GPT-6 Astra model. That finding suggests OpenAI’s protections did not extend to cloud platforms that also sell access to its models. The report centers on model security and deployment controls rather than a change to the models themselves. It also points to a gap between defenses applied directly by OpenAI and the safeguards in place on third-party cloud infrastructure offering the same systems.

Researchers found that the same attack technique continued to work for weeks on Microsoft Azure. The method was also effective against the newer GPT-6 Astra model.

For now, OpenAI’s protections appear not to have covered cloud platforms that also sell its models.
