OpenAI’s first consumer device will be a screenless smart speaker shaped like a doughnut and roughly the size of a hockey puck, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the work who requested anonymity because the matter is confidential.
The battery-powered product is intended to be carried around the home in one hand and used in different positions, whether someone is holding it or setting it down on a surface. Bloomberg said the device will include speaker grilles and microphones for conversation, lights that show when it is listening, and a camera and sensors that send information about the surroundings back to the AI.
An AI-centered computer for the home
According to the report, parts of the circular casing will move on their own when the device is responding. The goal is to make the hardware feel more alive than the stationary smart speakers that dominate the market today, where Amazon and Google are the main players.
Bloomberg said OpenAI is positioning the device as a computer built around AI and expects users to rely on it throughout the day. The experience is described as similar to ChatGPT’s voice mode, but with more advanced models running behind it.
Price discussions are in the $300-$400 range
Pricing has reportedly been discussed at $300 to $400 per unit. That would place it above most smart speakers and below a standard iPhone.
The hardware was designed with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom studio and is expected to use upscale materials, including high-quality metal. OpenAI bought Ive’s device startup io for $6.4 billion in May 2025. Decrypt also reported in April that OpenAI is separately co-developing a smartphone chip with Qualcomm and MediaTek.
Apple lawsuit adds pressure to the rollout
The report follows a lawsuit filed by Apple in July in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Apple accused OpenAI of misappropriating hardware trade secrets and named former engineer Chang Liu, former design executive Tang Yew Tan, and io Products in the complaint.
Apple’s filing points to a metal finishing technique that it says OpenAI asked a longtime Apple supplier to develop for an upcoming product. Bloomberg said it is not clear whether that allegation refers to the reported speaker, a different device, or a concept that was later scrapped.
OpenAI has denied the allegations. In a blog post on Monday, the company called the lawsuit “careless, aggressive and oddly personal,” said Apple had confused two employees with similar surnames, and published emails and text messages that it said weaken Apple’s claims. OpenAI filed a motion to dismiss late Wednesday.
Apple has also asked for a preliminary injunction that could limit OpenAI while the case moves forward, a step that could make the launch process harder.
Targeted for unveiling this year, shipping in 2027
Bloomberg reported that OpenAI is still aiming to unveil the speaker this year and ship it in 2027, and that work is continuing internally. A company representative declined to comment on product plans to Bloomberg.
Online pushback over AI use at home
OpenAI’s broader pitch for AI in home life has also drawn criticism online. Last week, Sam Altman posted that a “cool use case” for the ChatGPT Work agent was linking family calendars to generate a school-run podcast about one child’s soccer game and another child’s birthday.
Fortune reported that several critical replies received more likes than Altman’s original post. Those responses objected to the idea of software standing in for family conversation.
