OpenAI has updated its billing rules for the Codex platform, granting a special exemption for the GPT-6 Astra model from long-context surcharges. Astra, with a native 1.05 million token context window, will not incur additional fees even when inputs exceed 272K tokens in Codex. Other models (GPT-5.4/5.5/5.6) face 2x input and 1.5x output surcharges beyond 272K. Astra can use up to nearly 1M context at standard rates, but only on Codex; API pricing remains unchanged.

OpenAI just changed the billing rules on Codex. And GPT-6 Astra gets a carve-out: no long-context surcharge. Astra already supports a 1.05 million token context window natively, and now it won’t trigger extra charges in Codex even when prompts go past 272K tokens.

The other models? No break for them. GPT-5.4, GPT-5.5, and GPT-5.6 get hit with a 2x multiplier on input and cached input tokens, plus a 1.5x multiplier on output tokens, once they pass the 272K mark. Astra, by comparison, can stretch to nearly 1M context in Codex and still pay standard token rates.

But this waiver is only for Codex. For API calls, the usual long-context pricing stays put: 2x for input and 1.5x for output.
