OpenClaw said it will ship a new round of updates next week, including support for Claude Code plugins, an OpenAI Codex CLI plugin, ACP (Agent Communication Protocol) compatibility, a fix for agent interruption, and a split of its core engine into a separate package to reduce install size. The roadmap was outlined by founder Peter Steinberger in a thread on X.

Compatibility and packaging are the main focus

The planned release is centered on fitting OpenClaw into the current AI coding stack rather than redefining it. Claude Code plugin support would let the project work as an extension inside Anthropic’s ecosystem. Integration with OpenAI Codex CLI covers another major command-line workflow. ACP support points to communication across agents, a basic requirement for many multi-agent setups now taking shape.

One of the more practical items is a fix for agent interruption, aimed at stopping runs more cleanly. That is less flashy than new integrations, but it matters in daily use. Steinberger also said the core engine will be split into an independent package, a move meant to cut package size and improve modularity. The product direction is clear: OpenClaw is not trying to replace a full IDE, but to operate as a lightweight, embeddable, open-source agent engine.

Execution speed matters as much as feature lists

The competitive pace around AI coding tools is fast. The source article notes that Claude Code ships updates every few days, while Cursor is also moving quickly. In that setting, checking the standard feature boxes is only the start. Ongoing maintenance is where pressure builds.

OpenClaw is targeting the embeddable engine layer
