PayPal is rolling out a new rewards program for its stablecoin PYUSD, offering U.S. users on PayPal and Venmo a 3.7% annual return on their holdings. The program, announced on April 23 and expected to launch this summer, will pay rewards monthly in PYUSD as the company tries to increase adoption in an increasingly crowded stablecoin market.

According to the report, the rewards can be converted into fiat currency, sent to other users, or used for international transfers. That makes the initiative more than a simple yield feature: PayPal appears to be positioning PYUSD as a practical tool for payments and money movement across its ecosystem.

Building Utility Beyond Crypto Trading

Jose Fernandez da Ponte, PayPal’s senior vice president and general manager for blockchain, crypto, and digital currencies, said the company’s goal is to encourage use of PYUSD as a payment method throughout the PayPal network. He noted that stablecoins are part of the next generation of payment rails, while acknowledging that adoption will take time and require a long-term effort.

CEO Alex Chriss said PayPal is focused on how stablecoins could reshape the cost structure of payments by lowering expenses and improving transaction speed. The company plans to integrate PYUSD more deeply into its broader product suite over the course of the year, aiming to serve both merchants and consumers more efficiently.

PYUSD Remains Small Compared With Market Leaders

Despite PayPal’s brand reach, PYUSD is still far smaller than the dominant stablecoins. Its market capitalization stands at about $873 million, compared with roughly $145 billion for USDT and more than $61 billion for USDC. Coingecko data cited in the report shows that among 296 tracked stablecoins, only six currently have a market value above $1 billion.

PayPal also acknowledged that, like many competing tokens, PYUSD has so far been used primarily in crypto-related transactions rather than mainstream everyday payments. The new rewards program therefore reflects an effort to push PYUSD beyond trading activity and into broader commercial use.

Competition in Stablecoins Is Intensifying

The stablecoin sector has become more crowded since PYUSD launched. Financial firms including Robinhood and Revolut are reportedly exploring their own stablecoins, while some U.S. banks are also considering issuance. PayPal’s strategy is also in line with broader market practices: Coinbase already offers rewards to users who hold Circle’s USDC.

Overall, PayPal is combining yield incentives, transfer functionality, and payment integration in an attempt to give PYUSD a stronger foothold. Whether that will be enough to narrow the gap with entrenched leaders such as USDT and USDC remains an open question.
