Anthropic Refuses to Build Killer Robots, Sues Trump Administration
One notable absence from the deal is AI giant Anthropic. Reports say Anthropic insisted on contractual guarantees that the military would not use its technology for fully autonomous weapons or surveillance of U.S. citizens. This demand angered top officials. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth demanded that Anthropic allow the Pentagon to use the technology for "any lawful purpose." President Donald Trump then moved to ban federal agencies from using Anthropic's Claude chatbot, and Hegseth sought to label the company a "supply chain risk." Anthropic responded by suing the Trump administration.
OpenAI Steps In, Experts Warn of 'Automation Bias'
After Anthropic's exit, OpenAI quickly reached a deal with the Pentagon in March, replacing Anthropic with ChatGPT. OpenAI said in a statement Friday, "As we said when we announced the agreement months ago, we firmly believe that the people defending America should have the best tools in the world." Insiders note OpenAI also secured a clause requiring human oversight when its AI operates autonomously. As AI rapidly infiltrates command systems, ethical and risk concerns grow. Helen Toner, acting executive director of Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology and a former OpenAI board member, warned: "There's a phenomenon called 'automation bias' – people easily assume machines perform better than they actually do."
