The latest Bitcoin.com podcast, hosted by ‘Bitcoin Brian’, features Dr. Jemma Green, co-founder of the distributed ledger technology firm Power Ledger. Dr. Green is also the founder of the Global Blockchain Business Council and a Forbes contributor. In this episode, she explains how her Australian startup aims to revolutionize the energy industry by leveraging blockchain technology.
Democratizing Power Through Distributed Ledgers
“Our mission is around the democratization of power, and we see ourselves as being a distributed ledger for distributed energy markets,” says Dr. Jemma Green. Power Ledger’s proprietary software connects to smart meters to harness clean energy sources like solar and wind. Unused energy can then be sold in an open market using tokenized payments and smart contracts, enabling a truly decentralized energy trading ecosystem.
This approach challenges the traditional utility model, empowering individuals and communities to become both producers and traders of electricity. The transparency and immutability of blockchain provide the necessary trust, while smart contracts automate settlements and drastically reduce transaction costs. Dr. Green believes this will accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and increase grid resilience.
Strong ICO Pre-Sale, Public Sale Imminent
Power Ledger recently closed the pre-sale phase of its Initial Coin Offering (ICO), raising $17 million in just over three days. “Selling out in just over three days is a very strong performance in line with global ICO standards, which speaks to the strong levels of interest from consumer and institutional buyers,” said Dr. Green in a company statement. The public sale is scheduled to begin later this week on September 8, allowing investors to purchase POWR tokens using cryptocurrencies like Ethereum.
The POWR token is central to Power Ledger’s ecosystem, used for transaction fees, platform governance, and incentivizing green energy production. Dr. Green confirmed that the tokens will be listed on multiple exchanges after the public sale to ensure liquidity.
From JP Morgan to Blockchain Energy Pioneer
Dr. Green’s background is a blend of traditional finance and academic research. She worked at JP Morgan in 2013 before earning her Ph.D. in Energy Markets and Disruptive Innovation. This unique combination gave her deep insights into the inefficiencies of the current energy system and the potential of blockchain to disrupt it. As founder of the Global Blockchain Business Council, she promotes the responsible adoption of blockchain across industries.
Throughout the podcast, host Bitcoin Brian and Dr. Green also discussed broader applications of blockchain in the energy sector, the regulatory landscape, and the future of renewable energy trading. To hear the full interview, visit the Bitcoin.com podcast page or stream the player below.
