Qatar is in contact with both Washington and Tehran as it tries to help restart talks between the United States and Iran, according to Majed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry. Speaking on Sept. 20 during the Qatar Economic Forum in New York, Al Ansari said Qatari officials had been exchanging views with both sides over the past few weeks in an effort to narrow differences. He said several U.S. government officials had indicated that Washington wants an agreement and is looking for a way to end the conflict. Al Ansari did not provide a timetable for when negotiations might resume. He also said any settlement should protect regional stability and support international consensus on safeguarding strategic waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz. He added that the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is also being affected by regional conflict.

Qatar is maintaining contact with both the United States and Iran and is trying to help restart talks between the two sides, Majed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry, said on Sept. 20.

Speaking during the Qatar Economic Forum in New York, Al Ansari said Qatar had been exchanging views with Washington and Tehran over the past few weeks and was working to bridge differences. He did not give a timetable for the resumption of negotiations.

"We have heard several U.S. government officials confirm that the United States wants to reach an agreement and wants to find a solution to end this war," Al Ansari said.

He added that any solution should ensure regional stability and help build international consensus on protecting strategic waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz. He also said the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is currently being affected by regional conflict.
