Ahead of its Q2 earnings, Robinhood launched its L2 mainnet Robinhood Chain, built on Arbitrum Orbit, alongside tokenized stocks, on-chain lending, and AI trading tools. The stock rose 8.35% to a six-month high. The chain quickly attracted major protocols like Uniswap, Morpho, and Chainlink. However, dYdX’s decision to build its new DEX Arcus on Robinhood Chain instead of dYdX Chain triggered fierce community opposition, with fears of resource diversion and DYDX dilution. Despite founder promises to allocate tokens to the dYdX community, DYDX fell over 40% intraday.

On the eve of its Q2 earnings report, Robinhood announced the mainnet launch of its Layer 2 blockchain, Robinhood Chain, along with a suite of crypto products including tokenized stocks, on-chain lending, and AI-powered trading. The news drove Robinhood's stock up 8.35% to $108.6, a six-month high. In a highly competitive L2 landscape, Robinhood Chain leveraged Robinhood's massive user base and financial services to quickly onboard leading protocols, but also sparked an unexpected community controversy.

Robinhood Chain Mainnet and Product Ecosystem

At its "The World is Flat" event in London on July 2, Robinhood unveiled its strategic roadmap focusing on on-chain finance, AI trading, and global expansion. The centerpiece was Robinhood Chain, built on Arbitrum Orbit, which went live on the public mainnet after months of testing. The chain directly connects to Robinhood's on-chain users and provides developers with a plug-and-play DeFi environment. Robinhood positions it as an institutional-grade, AI-native infrastructure optimized for real-world assets (RWAs).

Alongside the chain, Robinhood expanded its on-chain product suite:

  • Tokenized Stocks: Robinhood Wallet now supports tokenized stock trading across 120+ countries and regions. Users can trade via DEXs like Uniswap, Rialto, Lighter, 1inch, and Arcus, and use the assets as collateral in DeFi lending or liquidity pools. Previously limited to Europe, the expansion comes amid rising demand for tokenized assets and growing competition between traditional and crypto exchanges.
  • Perpetual Futures on Robinhood Wallet: Enables 24/7 trading of stocks, commodities, and other assets beyond traditional market hours. Robinhood is offering 90 days of zero fees and gas subsidies, plus loyalty incentives.
  • Robinhood Earn: A decentralized lending product for US users, allowing them to deposit the USDG stablecoin into self-custodial wallets for an estimated ~7% APY. Morpho provides the lending infrastructure, with support from Steakhouse, Ethena, Spark, Maple, and an insurance mechanism to reduce risk.
  • Agentic Accounts for AI Trading: Available to eligible US users, these accounts connect to AI models with customizable risk parameters and capital limits, enabling autonomous market scanning and execution. Robinhood had previously introduced similar tools for equities and options.

These moves come as Robinhood's crypto business faces headwinds: Q1 crypto revenue fell 47% YoY to $134 million, and crypto notional trading volume dropped 48% to $24 billion. To find new growth engines, Robinhood is also expanding globally, with ~28 million users, a Canada launch, a Singapore MAS license, planned European perpetuals for commodities, ETFs, and forex, and upcoming UK crypto trading services.

Ecosystem Onboarding and the dYdX Controversy

Leveraging its massive user base, Robinhood Chain quickly attracted major protocols including Uniswap, 1inch, Lighter, Morpho, Chainlink, BitGo, Ethena, and EtherFi, covering trading, liquidity, lending, oracles, custody, and cross-chain services. However, dYdX's new DEX, Arcus, became a flashpoint. On July 2, the dYdX Foundation announced a partnership with Robinhood to launch Arcus on Robinhood Chain, supporting 95 tokenized stocks, perpetuals, and major crypto assets, with plans to allow tokenized stocks as collateral for perpetuals and even pre-IPO equity for hot private companies like OpenAI. Arcus is in beta, with a full launch expected later in 2026.

The community backlash centers on the fact that Arcus is built on Robinhood Chain, not dYdX Chain. dYdX founder Antonio explained in an open letter that operating a dedicated public chain forces trade-offs between performance, user experience, and decentralization, while competitors with faster execution and better liquidity capture market share. Choosing Robinhood Chain was driven by access to ~27.7 million funded accounts, providing instant user base and liquidity. Arcus also received a strategic investment from Robinhood Crypto.

Many dYdX community members argued that the core team launching a separate brand risks diverting development resources, product focus, and market attention to Arcus, potentially cannibalizing dYdX's brand value. Given that dYdX conducted one of the largest airdrops in the industry and Arcus has a potential token launch, traders and liquidity may migrate to the new platform, reducing dYdX Chain volume and activity, and diluting DYDX token value.

The dYdX Foundation responded that its commitment to the dYdX protocol and community governance remains unchanged: dYdX Chain continues to function normally with trading, deposits, withdrawals, staking, and governance intact; DYDX governance and staking mechanisms are unchanged, with staking rewards still paid in USDC; and community treasury, rewards treasury, and other assets remain fully controlled by DYDX holders via governance. Antonio also stated that as the founder and largest DYDX holder, his interests are aligned with the community, and he promised that if Arcus issues a token, part of it will be reserved for the dYdX community, with priority access for dYdX traders.

Market Reaction and Outlook

These assurances failed to calm the market. Following the announcement, DYDX dropped approximately 40.7% intraday. Robinhood's ambition extends beyond providing a blockchain infrastructure. By leveraging its massive user base, mature brokerage operations, and global compliance, Robinhood aims to use Robinhood Chain to expand its business frontiers, transforming from an internet broker into the next-generation global financial gateway. Whether this vision becomes reality remains to be seen.
