Robinhood Chain Mainnet Launch: From Brokerage to On-Chain Finance Gateway
On July 2, Robinhood officially launched its Layer 2 chain, Robinhood Chain, at the "The World is Flat" event in London. Built on Arbitrum Orbit, the chain is positioned as an institution-grade, AI-native blockchain infrastructure optimized for real-world assets (RWA). With approximately 27.7 million funded accounts, Robinhood aims to transform its internet brokerage into a global on-chain financial gateway.

Alongside the mainnet launch, Robinhood expanded its on-chain product suite: for tokenized stocks, Robinhood Wallet enabled trading across 120+ countries via DEXs including Uniswap, 1inch, Rialto, Lighter, and Arcus, with tokens usable as collateral in lending and liquidity pools. This feature was previously limited to Europe. In perpetuals, Robinhood Wallet introduced on-chain perpetual contracts for stocks, commodities, and more, offering 90 days of zero fees and gas subsidies. Robinhood Earn, a decentralized lending product for US users, allows deposits of USDG stablecoin into self-custody wallets for an estimated ~7% APY, backed by Morpho and supported by Steakhouse, Ethena, Spark, Maple, with insurance coverage. For AI trading, Robinhood launched Agentic Accounts (crypto edition) in the US, letting users set risk parameters and let AI autonomously execute market scans and strategies.
These expansions come amid Robinhood's crypto business slowdown: Q1 crypto revenue fell 47% YoY to $134 million, and crypto notional trading volume dropped 48% YoY to $24 billion. The platform now serves ~28 million users and is accelerating global expansion: launched in Canada, Singapore subsidiary obtained MAS license, Europe will roll out perpetuals on commodities/ETFs/forex, and UK crypto trading service is imminent.
Ecosystem Aggregation and dYdX Controversy: Why Arcus Sparked Community Backlash
Leveraging its massive user base, major protocols including Uniswap, 1inch, Lighter, Morpho, Chainlink, BitGo, Ethena, and EtherFi have onboarded Robinhood Chain across trading, liquidity, lending, oracles, custody, and cross-chain verticals. However, dYdX's move stirred significant controversy.
On July 2, the dYdX Foundation announced a partnership with Robinhood to launch Arcus, a decentralized exchange built on Robinhood Chain. Arcus will support 95 tokenized stocks, perpetuals, and major crypto assets, with plans to open Pre-IPO equity trading (e.g., OpenAI). A beta version is live, with full mainnet expected in late 2026. The key controversy: Arcus does not run on dYdX Chain but operates as an independent product on Robinhood Chain.
Antonio, dYdX founder, explained that operating a public chain requires constant trade-offs between performance, UX, and decentralization, while competitors capture market share with faster execution and simpler products. The choice of Robinhood Chain was largely driven by user access and liquidity — Robinhood's ~27.7 million funded accounts provide a ready user base. Arcus also received a strategic investment from Robinhood Crypto.
The community, however, feared that the core team launching a new brand under a new chain would divert development resources, product focus, and market attention away from dYdX, potentially cannibalizing its brand value. With dYdX's history of one of the largest airdrops, Arcus's potential token launch could lure traders and liquidity away from dYdX Chain, reducing activity and diluting DYDX's value. The dYdX Foundation insisted its commitment to the dYdX protocol and community governance remains unchanged — dYdX Chain continues unaffected, with deposits, withdrawals, staking, and governance intact; DYDX governance and staking remain; staking rewards paid in USDC; treasury assets fully controlled by DYDX holders. Antonio, as the largest DYDX holder, promised that if Arcus tokenizes, a portion will be reserved for dYdX community distribution, and priority access will be given to dYdX traders. Nevertheless, market sentiment didn't recover: DYDX token plummeted ~40.7% intraday following the announcement.
Overall, Robinhood's ambition extends far beyond offering a single chain. By leveraging its massive user traffic, mature brokerage operations, and global compliance footprint, it aims to accelerate its transition from an internet broker to the next-generation global financial gateway. Whether that ambition becomes reality remains to be tested by the market.
