Robinhood Chain Mainnet Launch: Institutional L2 with Comprehensive On-Chain Products
On July 2, Robinhood held its 'The World is Flat' event in London, unveiling the mainnet launch of Robinhood Chain, a Layer2 built on Arbitrum Orbit. The chain is designed for institutional-grade applications and AI-native architectures, with optimizations for real-world assets (RWA), offering a plug-and-play DeFi development environment. On the day of the announcement, Robinhood's stock surged 8.35% to $108.6, hitting a six-month high.

Robinhood expanded its on-chain product matrix alongside the chain: tokenized stocks became available via Robinhood Wallet in 120+ countries, tradable through Uniswap, 1inch, Lighter, and other DEXs, with lending and liquidity pool options; on-chain perpetuals launched with 90 days of zero fees and gas subsidies; for US users, Robinhood Earn introduced a decentralized lending product offering ~7% APY on USDG stablecoin deposits, powered by Morpho with support from Steakhouse, Ethena, Spark, and others, including insurance mechanisms; and AI-driven Agentic Accounts were introduced for eligible US customers to execute strategies autonomously. These moves come as Robinhood's crypto revenue fell 47% YoY to $134M in Q1, with crypto notional trading volume down 48% to $24B, spurring the need for new growth drivers.
dYdX's New DEX Arcus Ignites Community Dispute
The most controversial integration in Robinhood's ecosystem was dYdX Foundation's announcement of Arcus, a new DEX built on Robinhood Chain. Arcus supports 95 tokenized stocks, perpetuals, and major crypto assets, with plans to offer Pre-IPO equity trading. A beta version is live, with a full launch expected in late 2026. The key friction point: Arcus is not deployed on dYdX Chain but operates as an independent product. dYdX founder Antonio explained that running a dedicated L1 forced trade-offs between performance, UX, and decentralization, while competitors have gained share through faster execution and simpler products. He cited Robinhood's ~27.7 million funded accounts as a major draw for user and liquidity, alongside a strategic investment from Robinhood Crypto.
The community reacted strongly: many feared that the core team's focus and resources would shift toward Arcus, potentially cannibalizing dYdX's brand and value. The prospect of an Arcus token airdrop could attract traders and liquidity away from dYdX Chain, diluting DYDX's value. The dYdX Foundation reiterated its commitment to the dYdX protocol and governance, stating that dYdX Chain remains unaffected, with staking rewards paid in USDC. Antonio also pledged that any future Arcus token would allocate a portion to the dYdX community, and that Arcus would grant early access to dYdX traders. Despite these assurances, DYDX fell ~40.7% intraday after the announcement.
Conclusion: Robinhood's Ambition vs. Market Reality
Robinhood aims to transform from a retail brokerage into a next-generation global financial gateway, leveraging Robinhood Chain alongside its 28 million users, mature brokerage business, and global regulatory expansion (Canada launch, Singapore MAS license, European perpetuals for commodities/ETFs/forex, UK crypto trading). Top protocols including Uniswap, Morpho, Chainlink, Ethena, and EtherFi have already joined. However, the dYdX controversy highlights the risks of ecosystem partnerships causing token value migration. Whether Robinhood's grand vision will succeed remains to be tested by the market.
