Robinhood launched its L2 chain Robinhood Chain on July 2, 2026, built on Arbitrum Orbit, alongside tokenized stocks, on-chain lending, AI trading, and global expansion. The company's stock surged 8.35% to $108.6. Major protocols like Uniswap, Morpho, and Chainlink quickly integrated. However, dYdX's decision to launch a new DEX called Arcus on Robinhood Chain instead of dYdX Chain sparked fierce community opposition, with DYDX token dropping over 40% intraday. This article analyzes the strategic moves, market impact, and the controversy surrounding dYdX's pivot.

On July 2, 2026, ahead of its Q2 earnings release, Robinhood announced the mainnet launch of its Layer 2 chain, Robinhood Chain, built on Arbitrum Orbit. The news drove the company's stock up 8.35% to $108.6, a six-month high. Simultaneously, Robinhood unveiled a suite of crypto products including tokenized stocks, on-chain perpetuals, decentralized lending, and AI-powered trading, marking a bold push to transform from a retail brokerage into a global financial infrastructure provider.

Building the On-Chain Financial Gateway

Robinhood Chain is positioned as an institutional-grade, AI-native blockchain optimized for real-world assets (RWA). The chain integrates directly with Robinhood's user base and offers a plug-and-play DeFi development environment. The expanded product matrix includes tokenized stocks available in over 120 countries via Robinhood Wallet, tradable on DEXs such as Uniswap, 1inch, Rialto, and Lighter. Users can also use these tokenized stocks as collateral for lending or liquidity pools. On-chain perpetuals are also live, allowing trading outside traditional market hours, with 90 days of zero fees and gas subsidies. For yield, Robinhood Earn is rolling out to US users—a decentralized lending product offering ~7% APY on USDG stablecoin deposits, backed by Morpho and supported by Steakhouse, Ethena, Spark, and others with insurance mechanisms. Additionally, Robinhood introduced AI Agentic Accounts, enabling eligible users to set risk parameters and let AI execute trading strategies autonomously.

These expansions come as Robinhood's crypto revenue fell 47% QoQ to $134 million and nominal crypto trading volume dropped 48% to $24 billion in Q1. The platform now serves ~28 million funded accounts and is aggressively expanding globally: launching in Canada, securing a MAS license in Singapore, planning commodity/ETF/forex perpetuals in Europe, and opening crypto trading in the UK soon.

Protocol Aggregation and the dYdX Controversy

Leveraging its massive user base, Robinhood Chain quickly attracted top protocols: Uniswap, 1inch, Lighter, Morpho, Chainlink, BitGo, Ethena, and EtherFi, covering trading, lending, oracles, custody, and cross-chain. However, dYdX's move drew the most attention and backlash. On July 2, the dYdX Foundation partnered with Robinhood to launch Arcus, a decentralized exchange built on Robinhood Chain. Arcus supports 95 tokenized stocks, perpetuals, and major crypto assets, with plans to allow tokenized stocks and crypto as perpetual collateral and even pre-IPO shares of companies like OpenAI. A beta is live, with a full launch expected in late 2026.

The controversy stems from Arcus being deployed on Robinhood Chain rather than dYdX Chain, operating as a separate entity. dYdX founder Antonio explained that running a sovereign chain forces trade-offs between performance, UX, and decentralization, while Robinhood Chain offers immediate access to ~27.7 million funded accounts and deep liquidity. Arcus also received strategic investment from Robinhood Crypto. The dYdX community reacted strongly, fearing that the core team's focus and resources would shift to Arcus, potentially cannibalizing dYdX brand value. Given dYdX's historic airdrop and Arcus's likely token launch, users and liquidity could migrate, diluting DYDX value. The dYdX Foundation assured that its support for the dYdX protocol remains unchanged and that dYdX Chain continues to operate normally. Antonio, as the largest DYDX holder, promised to allocate a portion of any future Arcus token to the dYdX community and grant early access to dYdX traders. Despite this, DYDX plunged ~40.7% intraday. Robinhood's ambition to become the next-generation global financial gateway is clear, but the market will ultimately judge its execution.
