Crypto commentator Rune and Cobie publicly traded views on X over Base’s recent community controversy, with the exchange centering on trust, leadership and Coinbase’s relationship with crypto-native users. Rune argued that Cobie’s goal in taking over the Base App may be to push onchain trading, but said Base’s current leadership has repeatedly eroded user trust to the point that, in his words, believing anything tied to Base for more than 24 hours is a mistake. He said that kind of culture makes it difficult to attract new users.
Cobie replied that he took over work related to the Base App and Coinbase’s trading products a few days ago, though he does not oversee the Base chain itself. He acknowledged that Coinbase has long had distance from users, especially crypto-native users, and said both Base and Coinbase burned through a large amount of trust because of avoidable mistakes. Cobie said he wants to listen more closely to onchain users and build products people actually want to use.
Rune later responded again, saying Coinbase’s biggest issue is not just detachment from users but a long pattern of ignoring or hurting them. He added that more than 10,000 Base users suffered roughly 99% asset losses after trusting Base/Coinbase leadership, and said management’s handling of the matter deepened community anger.
BlockBeats reported on July 18 that crypto KOL Rune criticized Base’s leadership on X as debate around the network’s recent community controversy continued, while Cobie said he wants to help bring Coinbase closer to onchain users.
Rune questioned what Cobie could accomplish after taking over the Base App, saying the stated goal may be to push more onchain trading. But he argued that Base’s current leadership has kept weakening user trust, leaving users with the view that “believing anything related to Base for more than 24 hours is wrong.” In Rune’s view, that kind of internal culture makes it hard to win over new users.
Cobie replied that he took over work tied to the Base App and Coinbase’s trading products a few days ago, but said he is not responsible for the Base chain. He acknowledged that Coinbase has long been distant from users, especially crypto-native users. He also said Base and Coinbase had spent a large amount of user trust because of mistakes that could have been avoided.
According to Cobie, his aim is to listen more closely to onchain users and build products that users genuinely want to use.
Rune then pushed back again, saying Coinbase’s core problem is not only that it is out of touch with users, but that it has long ignored them and even harmed them. He said more than 10,000 Base users have suffered about 99% losses in their assets because they trusted Base/Coinbase leadership, and added that the leadership’s response to the incident made community dissatisfaction even worse.
Rune also said Base has the infrastructure needed to become the best Layer2 in crypto, but lacks leadership willing to take responsibility for users. He said he hopes Cobie can change that situation, while adding that Base’s problem is no longer just damaged trust and that community trust has almost entirely disappeared.
