Russia's Central Bank Governor Confirms Digital Ruble Launch on Sept. 1; EU Already Sanctioned It in 2025

The governor of the Bank of Russia has confirmed that the country's central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital ruble, is on track for a nationwide rollout on September 1. However, the European Union had already preemptively imposed sanctions on the digital ruble in 2025, as part of the bloc's ongoing restrictive measures in response to Russia's war against Ukraine. The development underscores how sovereign digital currencies can become targets of geopolitical friction even before they are fully deployed. The digital ruble thus faces not only domestic technical and adoption challenges but also significant cross-border compliance barriers from Western regulators.
