SBI Group (SBI Holdings), a major Japanese financial conglomerate, announced that it has received approval from the Financial Services Agency (FSA) and plans to issue a yen-pegged stablecoin within this week. The stablecoin, named "JPYSC," will be issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank, a subsidiary of SBI Group, and will be handled for trading by the cryptocurrency exchange SBIVC Trade. This marks the first trust-type stablecoin in Japan, representing a significant milestone for the country's digital asset landscape.
Issuance Details: What Is JPYSC?
According to Nikkei, SBI Group obtained the necessary regulatory nod on June 23, becoming the first entity in Japan to issue a stablecoin under a trust structure. JPYSC is designed to be fully backed by the Japanese yen on a 1:1 basis, enabling fast and low-cost transfers via blockchain technology. SBI Shinsei Trust Bank acts as the trustee, managing the reserve assets to ensure the stablecoin's value stability. SBIVC Trade, SBI's cryptocurrency exchange, will facilitate the exchange and trading of JPYSC for users.
Partnership and Significance: Integrating Group Financial Services
JPYSC was developed in collaboration with Star Tail Group, a fintech firm based in Singapore. SBI Group intends to combine the stablecoin with its existing financial services — including securities, banking, and crypto assets — to offer a more seamless digital financial experience. This initiative not only enhances operational synergy across the group's businesses but also provides new payment and settlement tools for both corporate and individual users. The FSA's approval of a trust-type stablecoin also sets a precedent for other financial institutions looking to explore compliant digital asset services.
SBI Group has long been active in the crypto and blockchain space, operating the exchange SBIVC Trade and investing in numerous blockchain ventures. The issuance of JPYSC further solidifies its leadership in digital finance. Industry observers believe that with the launch of a compliant stablecoin, Japan is well-positioned to play a significant role in the Asian and global stablecoin markets.
