Sean Bowe, co-founder of Tachyon, said in a post on X that Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake’s recent warnings about quantum threats were framed too vaguely and could do damage on several fronts. Bowe argued that broad, unclear alerts can backfire on quantum advocacy itself, even though he said both quantum and AI risks are real and deserve serious attention. He said teams across the industry are trying to make careful decisions about how to respond to those risks in practical terms and how to help users deal with uncertainty. Some teams, he wrote, have strong cryptographers in-house, while others rely on trusted outside experts. Because the trade-offs are complex and hard to explain to non-cryptographers, Bowe said experts should stay calm and accept the responsibility that comes with their role. Bowe added that once the situation is clarified, people may conclude that the episode was at most an unintentional publicity move, but that a large amount of trust could still be lost. He also said Drake had acknowledged there was no new information behind this latest warning and asked him to explain why he believed that approach was the right one.

ChainCatcher reported that Sean Bowe, co-founder of Tachyon, criticized recent quantum threat warnings from Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake in a post on X.

Bowe said the way those warnings were presented was too vague and would cause harm on several levels. He described it as self-inflicted damage to Drake’s own quantum advocacy work.

He wrote that quantum and artificial intelligence threats are real, and that industry teams are making careful decisions about how to address those risks in practical terms while helping users handle uncertainty.

According to Bowe, some teams have strong cryptographers with solid judgment, while others need to rely on trusted experts. Because the issues involve complex dimensions, he said the trade-offs are almost impossible to explain to non-cryptographers, and experts should remain calm and take responsibility for their role.

Bowe also said that once the situation becomes clearer, people may find that this was at most an unintentional publicity move. Even so, he said a large amount of trust could be lost, while no one is clear on what should happen next.

In his view, the broader direction of concern is correct, and earlier warnings had value. But he said the message has gradually turned into a runaway prediction lacking feedback constraints, which could have a lasting effect on trust in legitimate concerns around classical cryptography.

Bowe added that Drake had himself acknowledged there was no new information driving this latest warning, and asked him to explain why he believed this approach was appropriate.
