ShapeShift has launched Prism, a non-custodial crypto portfolio platform powered by Ethereum smart contracts, allowing users to build, rebalance, and settle diversified digital asset baskets without traditional third-party custody.

At the Consensus conference in New York City, ShapeShift founder and CEO Erik Voorhees announced the launch of Prism, a platform the company describes as a “trustless asset portfolio platform.” The new product is designed to let investors build and manage baskets of digital assets through non-custodial, Ethereum-based smart contracts, rather than relying on traditional exchanges or third-party custodians to hold funds.

According to ShapeShift, Prism targets a broad range of investors who want exposure to multiple cryptocurrencies inside a single structure. The company positioned the launch as a response to the rapid expansion of the crypto market, arguing that digital assets had become an increasingly important alternative investment category. In the announcement, ShapeShift noted that the combined crypto market capitalization had grown by more than 200% over the previous year to exceed $40 billion.

A Non-Custodial Approach to Digital Asset Exposure

The main selling point of Prism is its attempt to remove third-party risk from portfolio construction. Instead of leaving assets on an exchange, users interact with a system of smart contracts on Ethereum to create and maintain their positions. ShapeShift said the platform supports a wide range of cryptocurrencies, with examples including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Monero, and Ripple.

Voorhees framed the launch as a step forward in both transparency and security. In his remarks, he said Prism gives investors secure and transparent exposure to digital assets in a way that had not previously been possible. He also argued that the era of keeping funds on exchanges simply because it was easier should come to an end. ShapeShift further described Prism’s architecture as a new benchmark in financial security because portfolios are built entirely on non-custodial smart contracts.

This framing is significant because one of the longest-standing concerns in crypto markets has been custody. Investors have historically faced a difficult trade-off: use centralized services for convenience, or self-manage assets with more control but greater complexity. Prism was presented as an effort to bridge that gap by packaging diversified exposure into a simpler interface while preserving user control over funds.

Buy, Rebalance, and Settle Through an Ethereum Wallet

ShapeShift said it adapted lessons from its earlier product design into Prism, building what it called a diversified crypto portfolio with a simplified workflow. The company summarized the process in three steps: buy, rebalance, and settle. Importantly, these actions could be executed with nothing more than an Ethereum wallet, removing the need for users to open and fund multiple exchange accounts just to manage a multi-asset strategy.

To get started, users create a personal Prism portfolio, assign it a name, choose from a selection of digital assets, and decide how to allocate funds among them. After that, they provide an Ethereum address that allows them to fund and monitor the portfolio. ShapeShift said this address-based setup gives users proprietary control over their funds while enabling the investment vehicle to be tracked directly via the Ethereum network.

The company also listed several wallets that had already been tested for compatibility with the platform, including Exodus, Jaxx, and MyEtherWallet. That detail underscored ShapeShift’s effort to make Prism usable within the tools already familiar to crypto holders, rather than forcing adoption of a fully separate custodial environment.

Leaderboard Competition and Public Strategy Discovery

Beyond simple portfolio management, Prism introduced a social and competitive layer. Once a portfolio is created, it appears on a public leaderboard where performance can be compared with that of other Prism users. This feature gives the platform a quasi-marketplace dynamic, where investors can observe how others are allocating capital and which portfolios are outperforming.

ShapeShift said users could learn from top traders and even copy their portfolio choices by reviewing the public performance tables. In practice, that means Prism is not only a portfolio tool but also a discovery mechanism for strategy replication. For newer market participants, the leaderboard could function as an educational resource; for more active users, it could become a way to gain visibility based on track record.

This public ranking model also reflects an early attempt to blend crypto asset management with social-finance features. By surfacing returns in a transparent format, ShapeShift appears to be betting that users will value both self-directed investing and the ability to benchmark themselves against a broader on-chain community.

How Portfolio Settlement Works

The settlement mechanism described by ShapeShift is also notable for its simplicity. If an investor wants to close a Prism position, they are instructed to send a zero-ETH transaction to a designated Ethereum address. That transaction acts as a signal to the smart contract to close the portfolio and settle the position.

The company provided a basic illustration of how results would be reflected. If the underlying components of a Prism portfolio rose by 20%, the investor would receive 20% more Ether back than originally deposited, minus the fees displayed by the platform. In other words, returns are expressed through the settlement value of the Ether position tied to the selected basket of digital assets.

This structure highlights the central role of Ethereum in the product’s design. While users gain exposure to multiple crypto assets, the portfolio logic, funding, tracking, and settlement all rely on Ethereum’s smart contract infrastructure. In that sense, Prism is both a portfolio product and an example of Ethereum being used as a base layer for programmable financial services.

A Step Toward Borderless Finance

ShapeShift used the launch to make a broader point about the future of blockchain-based finance. Voorhees said Prism brings the industry one step closer to a world of truly borderless finance. He added that the platform could help open a wide horizon of financial experimentation on top of smart contracts.

That vision captures the bigger ambition behind the product. Prism is not being pitched merely as a convenience feature for crypto traders; it is being framed as part of a wider transition toward financial systems that are global, programmable, and less dependent on institutional intermediaries. In this view, portfolio management becomes just one application of a larger smart-contract financial stack.

Viewed in context, the launch reflects a period when the crypto industry was expanding beyond trading and simple wallet infrastructure into more structured financial tools. ShapeShift’s message is that investors should be able to diversify, track performance, and manage exposure without surrendering custody to centralized platforms. Whether for security-conscious users, portfolio experimenters, or investors drawn to transparent competition, Prism was introduced as a new model for digital asset management in a decentralized environment.

As presented by ShapeShift, Prism stands at the intersection of several themes that would continue to shape the industry: self-custody, smart contracts, transparent performance metrics, and programmable investment products. By combining those elements into a single interface, the company is attempting to redefine how crypto portfolios can be created and managed without traditional counterparties.
