The Shiba Inu meme token (SHIB) has seen a significant rally over the past seven days, rising 19.3% against the U.S. dollar, as the community eagerly awaits the beta launch of Shibarium — a layer-2 scaling solution built on Ethereum. On January 15, the SHIB team published a detailed blog post titled “Introduction to Shibarium: Shiba Inu’s Layer 2 Network,” confirming that the beta version is imminent.

What Is Shibarium?

Shibarium is designed to provide better scalability, faster transaction times, and lower fees for the SHIB ecosystem. According to the blog, the rollout will be phased. The network’s native token, BONE, will be used to pay for gas transactions and reward validators and delegators. Of the total 250 million BONE supply, 20 million have been reserved specifically for validator and delegator rewards over the coming years. Following the announcement, BONE climbed 11.1% in the last 24 hours and 16.1% over the week.

Broader Meme Coin Market

Other meme tokens also posted gains. Floki (FLOKI) rose 26.4% weekly, while Let's Go Brandon (LETSGO) surged 71.6%. Shibavax (SHIBX) increased by 55.9%, Metadoge (METADOGE) by 41.5%, and Hoge Finance (HOGE) by 30.5%. The original meme coin Dogecoin (DOGE) also saw a moderate 13.6% weekly rise. Despite these individual performances, the overall meme coin market capitalization declined 3.5% in the last 24 hours.

Market Implications

Shibarium was originally expected to launch in Q3 2022 but faced delays. The beta launch is seen as a crucial step toward reducing SHIB's reliance on Ethereum's high fees and enabling decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible token (NFT) applications within its ecosystem. Analysts suggest that a successful Shibarium rollout could further boost SHIB's price, although attention should be paid to the testnet's performance and the timeline for a mainnet transition.
