Six Bitcoin wallets dormant for over a decade moved 553.59 BTC (~$40 million) between Aug 16-26. Five sent funds to addresses unlinked to exchanges; one sent 40 BTC to Germany's Boerse Stuttgart Digital. Galaxy Research notes dormant BTC on-chain movement hit a low not seen since 2022 in Q2, with 2026 projected below half of last year. Head of research Alex Thorn said whale clients aren't selling over quantum risks, though some institutions paused buying.
Six Bitcoin addresses that had been inactive since between 2011 and 2014 woke up last week. Between Aug. 16 and 26, they transferred a combined 553.59 BTC worth roughly $40 million. On-chain data shows five of the wallets moved funds to addresses without any known exchange affiliation; the remaining one sent 40 BTC to Boerse Stuttgart Digital, a German crypto custody and trading services provider.
Separately, Galaxy Research data shows dormant Bitcoin's on-chain movement in the second quarter of this year dropped to the lowest level since 2022. The firm expects full-year 2026 movement to come in under half of last year's total. Galaxy head of research Alex Thorn said he has not seen whale clients offload Bitcoin due to quantum computing risks, but some institutional investors have indeed paused purchases for that reason.
