Bitcoin traders are heading into the U.S. inflation release with the Federal Reserve outlook, not just the headline CPI print, at the center of the market’s attention.
Inflation data is due at 8:30 a.m. ET on Oct. 14. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expect September’s consumer price index to rise 0.6% month on month and 3.6% year on year. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, is forecast to increase 0.2% from August and 2.5% on an annual basis.
The report is closely watched because it can reshape expectations for how the Fed handles interest rates. For bitcoin, analysts cited in CoinDesk’s Daybook said the key issue is how the data changes the market’s rate path assumptions.
What analysts are watching for bitcoin
Ryan Lee, chief analyst at Bitget Research, said a recent selloff has reduced leverage in bitcoin, but may not have fully cleared out the market’s riskier bets. That leaves open the possibility that traders are still carrying sizable leveraged positions. If bond yields move higher and expectations for rate cuts pull back, bitcoin could face another cascade of forced selling, he said.
Utkarsh Ahuja, founder and managing partner at Moon Pursuit Capital, said investors should be cautious about assuming the Federal Reserve can ease policy as quickly as markets would like. He said he is watching the underlying inflation figures together with the bond market’s reaction. A softer reading, he noted, could support a recovery in risk appetite.
A Bitunix analyst said the market is also tracking ETF flows and swings in oil prices for more clues on where risk appetite, and bitcoin, may head next.
Oil prices are part of the inflation watch
The chart referenced in the newsletter shows daily price swings in Nymex-listed WTI crude futures.
According to CoinDesk, oil has bounced off the bullish trendline drawn from the July lows, reinforcing the broader upward path. On the upside, the $100 psychological level and the Sept. 15 high of $106.75 are the key levels to watch. A rally toward those levels could add to inflation concerns and potentially weigh on risk assets.
Other market items highlighted in Daybook
The same CoinDesk newsletter also listed several other developments drawing attention across crypto and broader markets. Coins.ph, described as the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the Philippines, is said to be facing punitive action from the country’s central bank. Coinbase said bitcoin should begin work now on a security fix against a potential future quantum threat. Ripple is adding wallet technology from Stripe-owned Privy to the XRP Ledger, allowing financial applications and AI agents to create accounts, hold crypto and make payments without requiring users to manage their own wallet software.
The Associated Press also reported that global benchmarks were mixed in cautious trading after U.S. stocks edged back from record levels. Inflation concerns, rising bond-market pressure and the Middle East conflict were cited as factors affecting sentiment, while interest in computer chips and artificial intelligence continued to support some global shares.
