SMBC Nikko Securities said on Oct. 2 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding to develop DeFi Gateway, a decentralized finance platform aimed at investors in Japan. The participants in the project are blockchain development firm Nethermind, Uniswap Labs, the general incorporated association Nyx Foundation, and Coinbase Technologies, which operates Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network. According to the announcement, the project will build a liquidity supply protocol and proprietary liquidity pools designed to comply with Japanese laws and regulations, with development targeted for completion by mid-2027. The work is centered on three tracks: an "agentic vault" using verifiable and reproducible AI with an intuitive user interface; a public framework for compliant liquidity pools using Uniswap v4 Hooks and built-in AML/CFT and investor protection mechanisms; and asset management strategies covering digital assets including stablecoins and real-world assets, or RWAs. The project is being jointly led by SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind.
SMBC Nikko Securities said on Oct. 2 it had signed a memorandum of understanding to develop DeFi Gateway, a decentralized finance platform aimed at investors in Japan.
The companies and groups involved are blockchain development firm Nethermind, Uniswap Labs, the general incorporated association Nyx Foundation, and Coinbase Technologies, which operates Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network. The project is meant to build a liquidity supply protocol and proprietary liquidity pools that match Japanese legal and regulatory requirements. The target for completing development is mid-2027.
Three areas of development
The partnership focuses on three workstreams. Simple enough.
- Building an "agentic vault" that uses verifiable and reproducible AI, along with an intuitive user interface.
- Using Uniswap v4 Hooks to create a public framework for compliant liquidity pools with built-in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing, or AML/CFT, measures, along with investor protection mechanisms.
- Developing asset management strategies for digital assets, including stablecoins and real-world assets, or RWAs.
Jointly led by SMBC Nikko and Nethermind
SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind are jointly leading the project.
SMBC Nikko Securities is responsible for communication with regulators and for providing expertise in compliance, risk models, and portfolio management. Nethermind is handling the technical design and development side. That covers AI strategy and integration, smart contract security, and automated market making and Uniswap v4 Hooks strategies.
