Anza, the team behind Solana’s core client, said it is removing floating-point operations from the Solana core protocol in stages. The first step, SIMD-0391, has already been activated in mainnet beta at epoch 1026 and replaces floating-point calculations with fixed-point math in the Stake Program and in validator client warmup and cooldown logic. A second proposal, SIMD-0607, has been submitted and is under review, targeting the runtime itself by removing floating-point operations from inflation reward and rent calculation paths.
According to Anza, floating-point math can produce different rounding outcomes across hardware, validator clients, and compilers. That creates a risk of consensus divergence and threatens network liveness. The two changes are designed to remove that risk by standardizing fixed-point arithmetic. Anza also said it will continue addressing floating-point operations in other parts of the protocol.

The first layer, SIMD-0391, has already been activated on mainnet beta at epoch 1026. It replaces floating-point math with fixed-point arithmetic in the Stake Program and in warmup and cooldown logic used by validator clients.
A second layer, SIMD-0607, has been proposed and is now under review. It targets the runtime itself and would remove floating-point operations from the calculation paths for inflation rewards and rent.
Anza said floating-point operations can produce different rounding results across hardware, validator clients, and compilers. In its view, that can lead to consensus divergence and create risks for network liveness. The two changes are intended to eliminate that risk through standardized fixed-point arithmetic.
Anza added that it will continue addressing floating-point operations in other parts of the protocol.
