Anza said it is removing floating-point operations from the Solana core protocol in stages, a change aimed at preventing consensus divergence caused by inconsistent rounding across environments. The first upgrade, SIMD-0391, has already been activated on mainnet beta at epoch 1026. It replaces floating-point operations with fixed-point arithmetic in the Stake Program and in validator client warmup and cooldown logic. A second proposal, SIMD-0607, has been submitted and is now under review. That change targets the runtime itself and would remove floating-point operations from the code paths used to calculate inflation rewards and rent. According to Anza, floating-point behavior can vary across hardware, validator clients, and compilers, which may lead to different rounding outcomes. Those differences can in turn create consensus divergence and pose risks to network liveness. The company said standardizing on fixed-point arithmetic is intended to eliminate that class of risk, and that additional floating-point paths will be addressed later.
