Solana core development team Anza announced the activation of the first feature switch for proposal SIMD-0437 on Beta mainnet epoch 1028, reducing rent per byte from 6960 to 6333 lamports. The proposal includes five switches aiming to cut storage costs by 90%, eventually lowering lamports to 696 and dropping token account rent-exempt deposits from roughly $0.16 to $0.016.
Anza, the Solana core development team, said on X that the first feature switch tied to proposal SIMD-0437 is now live on Beta mainnet epoch 1028. The update cuts rent per byte from 6960 to 6333 lamports. So yes, this is the opening step in rolling out the proposal.
SIMD-0437 has five feature switches overall and aims to slash Solana's per-byte storage cost by 90%. When all five are live, lamports will fall from 6960 to 696, while the rent-exempt deposit for token accounts will drop from about $0.16 to $0.016. A big cut. And it means cheaper storage for users.
Anza said the remaining switches will be turned on gradually, with network storage efficiency being improved along the way.
