Sony Group has officially launched a global onchain entertainment incubation program, putting new weight behind Soneium, its Ethereum Layer 2 network, and inviting developers worldwide to build entertainment-focused applications on the platform. Sony said the initiative draws on lessons from 43 projects supported across its previous two incubation cycles and is aimed at moving Web3 entertainment from technical testing into commercialization.
Global applications open for entertainment products built on Soneium
According to Sony’s Oct. 29 announcement, the program is open to independent creators and startups around the world, with a focus on next-generation consumer entertainment products built on Soneium.
Unlike earlier, broader efforts, this round is tightly focused on the entertainment vertical. Sony said it wants to use blockchain’s verifiability and assetization features to explore new forms of interaction between creators and global fan communities, along with native community governance and long-term value creation models.
The application window opened in October and will remain open through the end of December. Multiple rounds of qualification screening and in-depth review are expected to continue until March 2027, giving shortlisted teams time to refine prototypes and prepare for later stages.
Music, film and gaming resources are part of the pitch
For early-stage Web3 teams, one of the main draws is Sony’s existing business footprint. Selected projects will not only gain access to Soneium’s underlying infrastructure, but may also work with Sony business lines across several entertainment segments.
The report said Sony’s operations span global music production, Hollywood film distribution, the PlayStation gaming ecosystem and consumer electronics hardware. Teams chosen for the program may explore onchain applications tied to major entertainment IP and receive support in brand licensing, joint promotion and cross-sector collaboration.
Beyond industry coordination, Sony has also assembled a support structure covering business development, global marketing, community bootstrapping and early-stage fundraising. The stated goal is to help developers bridge the gap between product code and commercial rollout while lowering the barrier to launching consumer-facing applications.
Built on two earlier cycles and 43 supported projects
Sony said it has been steadily building its onchain ecosystem rather than entering the field all at once. Company data cited in the report shows that since formally entering blockchain incubation in 2024, Sony has screened and supported 43 early-stage projects from around the world across two previous cycles.
Those earlier programs were described as being more focused on validating base-layer architecture and developer tools. The new program marks a shift in emphasis, with Sony explicitly saying the next phase is about helping onchain entertainment projects move beyond the lab stage and into commercial-scale deployment.
To assess commercial potential, Sony has set several review criteria. The committee will focus on the originality of the entertainment experience, the depth of IP integration, the ability to drive real community growth, the scalability of the business model and the project’s differentiated position in existing global markets.
Soneium moves past technical validation
The report describes Soneium as a rare consumer-facing platform within the Ethereum Layer 2 ecosystem and says it has carried expectations of bringing Web3 to a much broader user base since launch. With this global incubation push, Sony is continuing to move its content and entertainment strengths onto blockchain rails.
TechFlowPost said the move shows Sony’s Web3 strategy entering a deeper phase. As the two-month global recruitment process gets underway, Soneium is also shifting away from a stage centered on technical validation and toward commercial implementation.
