The long-running animated sitcom South Park returned with its latest special, Post COVID, this week, offering a dystopian yet satirical vision of a world where Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies have become the sole payment methods. Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the show has been a cultural mainstay since 1997, known for its biting humor and willingness to tackle controversial topics. In this episode, set many years after the pandemic, the characters have aged, and the financial system has undergone a radical shift.
The Motel Scene: Only Crypto Accepted
In the episode, the main character Stan Marsh returns to his hometown after learning of the death of his childhood friend Kenny McCormick. As he checks into a budget motel called the “Super 12 Motel Plus,” the clerk informs him that the establishment only accepts Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. “Now of course we only take bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies,” the clerk says. “Because… ya know — It’s the future — we’ve all decided centralized banking is rigged so we trust more in fly-by-night Ponzi schemes.” Stan sighs and hands over a card bearing the Bitcoin logo with a QR code. The exchange perfectly encapsulates the tension between the crypto community’s anti-establishment ethos and the widespread skepticism regarding the speculative nature of digital assets.
Bitcoin's Long History on Television
This is far from the first time Bitcoin has appeared in popular television. The crypto asset made its television debut in a 2012 episode of The Good Wife. In 2013, The Simpsons character Krusty the Clown mentioned Bitcoin. Over the years, Bitcoin has been featured in shows including Parks and Recreation, Mr. Robot, Morgan Spurlock Inside Man, NCIS: Los Angeles, Almost Human, House of Cards, and The Big Bang Theory. More recently, the 2021 Marvel series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier referenced Bitcoin, and the American comedy-drama Shameless included multiple crypto-related plots. The game show Jeopardy also featured Bitcoin questions on two occasions.
South Park's depiction is unique because it directly mocks the underlying philosophy of cryptocurrency maximalists who view centralized banking as inherently corrupt. By having the motel clerk simultaneously endorse the “rigged” narrative while labeling crypto a “Ponzi scheme,” the show highlights the paradox within the crypto movement: many participants embrace the technology precisely because they distrust traditional finance, yet they pour money into highly volatile and unregulated markets that often attract scams. The episode has resonated widely, with both supporters and critics of cryptocurrency engaging in lively debates on social media.
