Starknet is considering several options, including a possible transition to a Layer 1 network, as it looks for more direct control over its security migration timeline. In a post on X, Eli Ben-Sasson said the move is being evaluated because Starknet, as a Layer 2, currently depends on Ethereum for base-layer security. That dependency matters as the network prepares for cryptographic risks tied to quantum computing and AI. Ben-Sasson said Starknet, which is built on ZK-STARK technology, has cryptographic agility and already has a post-quantum security migration roadmap in place. Based on that plan, Starknet expects it could complete the relevant upgrade as early as 2027. He also compared Starknet’s timeline with other major chains. Ethereum is aiming to make its Layer 1 fully resistant to quantum attacks by the end of 2029, while Bitcoin has not made a similar commitment, according to the post.

Starknet is evaluating several paths, including a possible move to Layer 1, as it seeks greater control over how it upgrades network security against future cryptographic threats.

In a post on X, Eli Ben-Sasson said the issue stems from Starknet’s current role as a Layer 2 network, which relies on Ethereum for underlying security. He said Starknet is looking at options that would let it manage its own security migration process in response to cryptographic risks that could come from quantum computing and AI.

Post-quantum roadmap already in place

Ben-Sasson said Starknet is built on ZK-STARKs, giving it cryptographic agility, and that the network has already set a roadmap for a post-quantum security transition. Starknet expects it could complete the relevant upgrade as early as 2027.

He also pointed to timelines on other networks. Ethereum plans to make its Layer 1 fully resistant to quantum attacks by the end of 2029, while Bitcoin has not made a similar commitment.
