Customer Spending Drives Treasury Growth
Rather than converting digital payments into cash, Steak n Shake retains all customer bitcoin within a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. Management described the structure as self-sustaining, with daily restaurant transactions directly fueling treasury growth through improved sales performance.
The chain enabled Lightning Network payments across all U.S. locations earlier this year, sharply reducing reliance on traditional card processors. Transaction costs fell roughly 50% compared with credit card payments, and same-store sales rose 15% in subsequent months—evidence executives cited of strong customer adoption.
Rewards Program Reinforces Bitcoin Usage
Steak n Shake later formalized its treasury framework and expanded customer incentives, partnering with bitcoin rewards platform Fold Holdings. A limited promotion offered customers $5 in bitcoin through the Fold app for eligible purchases such as the Bitcoin Burger and Bitcoin Meal items. The initiative aimed to encourage routine bitcoin usage through everyday dining rather than speculative behavior.
This utility-focused strategy differs from investment-driven treasury approaches that rely on capital markets to fund bitcoin purchases via stock or debt issuance. Steak n Shake operates under Biglari Holdings in San Antonio, with Sardar Biglari overseeing operations. The parent company has not indicated whether bitcoin fits broader corporate plans, leaving Steak n Shake to execute the strategy independently.
