Steak ’n Shake says its move into Bitcoin payments is showing up in store performance. Nine months after adding BTC as a payment option, the U.S. burger chain said same-store sales have posted double-digit growth, and all Bitcoin received from customers is now being routed into a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve tied to employee bonuses and other company programs.
Bitcoin checkout launched across U.S. locations
The company began accepting Bitcoin in May 2025 through the Lightning Network, making BTC payments available at all U.S. restaurants. Customers can use Bitcoin directly for burgers and shakes, and the chain links that rollout to a clear rise in comparable-store sales. According to the report, some recent estimates place that increase at roughly 15% to 18%.
Transaction costs are part of the pitch. The Lightning Network can reduce payment fees by as much as 50% compared with traditional credit cards, a notable difference in a restaurant business where margins are tight. Small savings at the checkout counter can matter a lot when spread across a national footprint.
BTC receipts are being held, not converted
Instead of immediately turning crypto payments into dollars, Steak ’n Shake says it sends all BTC receipts into its Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, or SBR. The article says recent disclosures indicate the reserve now holds about $15 million worth of Bitcoin, built from day-to-day customer payments as well as additional strategic purchases.
The company describes the model as a reinforcing cycle: customers pay in Bitcoin, sales increase, the reserve grows, and crypto proceeds are used to support new initiatives. One of those programs is Bitcoin-based bonus pay for employees. That makes the reserve more than a treasury line item; it is being tied to ongoing operations.
A deeper retail use case for Bitcoin
The report frames Steak ’n Shake’s strategy as one of the more aggressive examples of real-world Bitcoin integration in retail. Many merchants have experimented with crypto checkout, but fewer have connected payments, treasury accumulation, and staff incentives this closely. In its anniversary post, the company ended with a short message: “Thank you Bitcoiners!”
