Strike’s European Compliance Milestone: MiCA License from MFSA
Bitcoin financial services firm Strike has announced a significant regulatory milestone: its European entity, Zap (Strike) Europe Limited, has been approved by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) to operate as a Crypto Asset Service Provider under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). This license enables Strike to offer Bitcoin trading, payments, custody, and other core services across all 27 EU member states under a single, harmonized regulatory framework.
MiCA Framework: One License, 27 Markets
MiCA, which entered into force in stages from late 2024, introduces a passporting mechanism for crypto asset service providers. Once authorized in one EU member state, a firm can legally provide services in any other member state without needing separate national licenses. Strike’s license, granted by the MFSA, covers the full scope of virtual asset service activities defined under MiCA, including wallet custody, exchange, and payment services. Malta has been an early adopter and proponent of MiCA implementation, making it a favorable jurisdiction for firms seeking to access the entire EU market efficiently.
Strategic Implications for Strike and the European Market
Strike has focused on integrating Bitcoin into everyday payments and savings, with existing operations in the United States and El Salvador. Europe, with a population of over 440 million and increasingly clear crypto regulations, represents a key growth frontier. The MFSA authorization allows Strike to bypass the administrative burden of separate national approvals in each EU country and quickly enter major economies such as Germany, France, and Italy. It can now partner with local banks and payment providers to roll out Bitcoin-based financial products. Additionally, MiCA’s stringent consumer protection, capital adequacy, and anti-money laundering requirements enhance user trust, particularly among institutional clients seeking compliant platforms.
Overall, Strike’s compliance achievement not only opens nearly 30 European markets for its services but also validates the passporting efficiency of the MiCA framework—a model that could encourage other crypto firms to follow suit in regulated EU expansion.
