Strike Secures MFSA License for Crypto Asset Service Provider Status
Bitcoin financial services firm Strike has announced that its European operating entity, Zap (Strike) Europe Limited, has received approval from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) to operate as a Crypto Asset Service Provider (CASP) under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. This license allows Strike to offer a full suite of bitcoin-related financial services across all 27 EU member states under a unified regulatory framework.
Cross-Border Benefits Under MiCA
MiCA introduces a harmonized licensing regime for crypto asset issuers and service providers across the EU. By securing MFSA approval, Strike's European entity gains the right to passport its services into every other member state without additional national-level approvals. This significantly reduces compliance overhead and market entry barriers, enabling Strike to rapidly scale its operations throughout the region.
Strike’s Compliance Strategy and European Expansion
Strike has consistently prioritized regulatory compliance, having previously obtained payment and financial services licenses in the United States and El Salvador. Choosing Malta as its EU gateway aligns with the island nation's reputation as a 'blockchain island' with a mature digital asset legislative framework. CEO Jack Mallers emphasized that regulatory approval is crucial for building user trust and driving mainstream Bitcoin adoption. Following the MFSA authorization, Strike plans to roll out its core services—including instant bitcoin payments, Lightning Network support, and fiat-to-bitcoin conversion—to users in additional EU countries.
Impact on the EU Crypto Market
With MiCA fully effective from 2025, an increasing number of crypto firms are pursuing licenses in regulatory-friendly jurisdictions like Malta, France, and Germany. Strike’s entry intensifies competition in the EU bitcoin services sector, challenging traditional banks, payment processors, and local exchanges. For EU consumers, this means more compliant, secure, and cost-effective channels for bitcoin custody, trading, and payments simultaneously. Strike’s compliance trajectory also serves as a blueprint for non-EU crypto companies aiming to enter the bloc’s market.
