Supabase has acquired database company Turso, saying the deal is aimed at AI agent use cases where each agent may need its own database.
Turso rebuilt SQLite in Rust and turned it into a cloud database product that can be created in large numbers and on demand. Supabase plans to use that setup for AI agents, which it says are driving a sharp increase in database creation.
More than 1 million databases created each week
Supabase said its platform is already creating more than 1 million databases per week. About 70% of new databases, it said, now come from agents or AI tools.
The company framed the acquisition around that jump in database demand tied to agent activity.
Turso built for many small, short-lived workloads
According to Supabase, Turso’s architecture allows a single server to manage millions of databases, loading them when needed and pausing them when idle. That makes it suitable for agent tasks that are small in size, numerous, and created at short notice.
No immediate product merger
The companies said they will not directly merge their products for now. Supabase will continue developing around Postgres, while Turso will keep building on SQLite. Existing databases, APIs, and workflows will remain unchanged, and Turso Database will continue as an open-source project.
Over time, the two sides plan to connect their products step by step. Smaller agent workloads would start on Turso, then move into Supabase’s Postgres system as needs expand.
Founder joins Supabase; deal value undisclosed
Turso founder Glauber Costa will join Supabase and take charge of agent-related services.
The companies did not disclose the value of the acquisition.
