Swift pointed out in its announcement that a large number of digital assets and tokenization experiments are emerging across global financial markets, yet these initiatives often exist in isolated "digital islands" with no interoperability. Fragmentation not only adds complexity to cross-border transactions but also restricts the free flow of liquidity. To address this, Swift's shared ledger initiative, based on the "unified ledger" concept, aims to build a standardized connection layer. Sandbox Tests Validate High-Frequency, Large-Value Settlements
Before entering the MVP phase, Swift had completed a series of successful sandbox tests. The results confirmed that the ledger architecture can support high-frequency, large-value settlements while complying with strict regulatory requirements and anti-money laundering (AML) standards. Swift emphasized that the core advantages of the shared ledger include:
24/7 real-time settlement. Traditional bank clearing introduces time lags, limiting capital efficiency. The shared ledger enables around-the-clock instant clearing, significantly improving cross-border fund flow efficiency.
Programmable finance. With smart contracts, payment and settlement processes can be automated. For instance, when specific conditions are met, the smart contract automatically triggers asset transfer and completes settlement, reducing manual intervention and operational risk.
High interoperability. Different blockchain networks (public, private) and traditional databases can communicate freely. Swift's standardized connection layer becomes a "common language" for value transfer between heterogeneous systems, avoiding duplicated integration costs.
