SWIFT has launched a blockchain-based shared ledger pilot involving 17 major global banks, including Citi, HSBC, Standard Chartered, UBS, MUFG, BNP Paribas, Wells Fargo, and DBS. The initiative is designed to connect distributed ledger technology with SWIFT’s existing global messaging network, helping banks coordinate tokenized cross-border payments more efficiently.
According to SWIFT, the platform enables institutions to verify payment commitments and synchronize transaction flows in real time, supporting smoother execution of tokenized transfers between banks. Rather than replacing current settlement rails outright, the project focuses on improving coordination, visibility, and operational efficiency. SWIFT also says the system can enhance liquidity management, improve cash-flow visibility, and support consistent recognition of tokenized assets across participating institutions.
Coordination, not a universal settlement rail
The pilot has also revived discussion around Ripple and XRP’s long-term place in international finance. Some market observers argue that a SWIFT-led shared ledger could reduce the practical need for XRP in cross-border payments. Others say the move highlights the very structural inefficiencies XRP was built to address, especially around fragmented liquidity and interoperability.
Market analyst Coach JV argues that SWIFT’s shared ledger is mainly a coordination layer for tokenized bank deposits, not a universal settlement network. Under this model, final settlement can still occur through existing RTGS systems, correspondent banking channels, or other rails chosen by the parties. In that sense, SWIFT appears focused on standardizing interbank coordination on top of established infrastructure, while Ripple’s approach is more directly tied to solving cross-border liquidity frictions.
Interoperability is becoming central
As tokenized deposits, stablecoins, CBDCs, commercial bank tokens, and both private and public blockchains continue to multiply, the financial system is becoming increasingly fragmented. Different regulatory regimes, asset standards, and settlement models are making interoperability a central issue for the next phase of digital finance.
Within that debate, some experts note that XRP was designed as a neutral bridge asset capable of moving value between currencies and digital assets, potentially reducing the need for institutions to pre-fund accounts around the world. That could lower costs and reduce idle liquidity. Still, on-chain analytics firm Iso Ledger takes a more cautious stance, saying it remains unclear whether banks will ultimately adopt XRP as a bridge asset or continue to rely on their own tokenized deposits and existing settlement infrastructure.
Overall, SWIFT’s pilot signals that major banks are prioritizing an interoperable coordination framework that works with current systems as cross-border payments become more tokenized. Whether the market eventually moves toward broader use of bridge assets such as XRP remains an open question.
