Hardware wallet manufacturer Tangem AG has announced a partnership with global payments giant Visa to launch a novel self-custodial crypto payment solution. The initiative integrates a Visa payment card with Tangem's hardware wallet, enabling users to spend their cryptocurrency or stablecoin balances at any Visa-accepting merchant across Europe.
Key Mechanism: Private Key Embedded in Chip, Physical Card Required for Transactions
Unlike traditional custodial payment cards where a third party holds the private keys, Tangem's new card embeds the user's private key directly into the payment chip. Every transaction requires both the physical card and user authorization, ensuring exclusive asset control. Tangem emphasizes that crypto assets never leave the user's custody, and all transactions must be actively initiated by the cardholder, significantly reducing risks of asset loss due to platform hacks or internal operational errors.
Product Background and Coverage
Founded in 2017, Tangem specializes in cold wallet hardware. Its products support more than 6,000 digital assets and have produced over 1 million secure cards, available in more than 160 countries. This partnership with Visa marks Tangem's expansion from pure asset storage into payment applications. Users can now spend their crypto holdings at tens of millions of Visa-accepting merchants across Europe, just like using a regular bank card, while enjoying hardware-grade security.
Industry Significance: Merging Self-Custody Philosophy with Mainstream Payments
This collaboration is seen as a key milestone in combining the self-custody philosophy with traditional financial infrastructure. Visa has been actively investing in crypto and blockchain, previously launching USDC settlement and crypto credit cards. Tangem's solution directly addresses the core principle of "Not your keys, not your coins" by materializing private keys in a physical card format. Users can achieve liquidity for their crypto assets without sacrificing sovereignty.
Tangem stated that the self-custodial Visa card will initially roll out in European markets, with plans to expand to other regions. Users can manage the card, top up crypto assets, and view transaction history through the Tangem App. All operations remain decentralized, and Tangem has no ability to intervene in user assets or transactions.
