Telegram has announced a strategic partnership with Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI to integrate its Grok AI chatbot into the platform's user base of over one billion. The news was disclosed by Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov on social media platform X on Tuesday, signaling a major fusion of AI with instant messaging.
Deal Details: One-Year Integration and Financial Terms
Durov wrote in his post: "This summer, Telegram users will gain access to the best AI technology on the market. Elon Musk and I have agreed to a 1-year partnership to bring xAI’s Grok to our billion+ users and integrate it across all Telegram apps." Under the agreement, Telegram will secure a financial package worth $300 million, structured as a mix of cash and equity from xAI. Additionally, Telegram will receive 50% of the revenue from xAI subscriptions purchased through its platform. Durov highlighted: "This also strengthens Telegram’s financial position: we will receive $300M in cash and equity from xAI, plus 50% of the revenue from xAI subscriptions sold via Telegram."
Strategic Significance: AI-Driven Messaging Competition
Telegram has historically relied on premium features and crypto ventures rather than advertising. By integrating Grok, the platform gains a foothold in the AI sector. xAI’s Grok, previously available only on X, will now reach a vastly broader audience through Telegram. While some critics express concerns about AI's role in private messaging, supporters view the move as a step toward broader AI accessibility and increased competition in the messaging space. The partnership underscores Telegram’s growing influence in the evolution of AI-driven communication platforms.
