Messaging giant Telegram is deepening its push into cryptocurrencies. Its self-custodial wallet, built on the TON blockchain and developed by The Open Platform (TOP), has rolled out multi-asset trading and yield features, bringing crypto capabilities to over 100 million users. Previously limited to Toncoin (TON), the wallet now supports Bitcoin, USDT on TON, and newer assets like Notcoin.
Seamless Onboarding for Newcomers
The key improvement is that users can now buy, sell, or hold crypto directly within Telegram without needing to perform complex on-chain deposits. This dramatically lowers the barrier for crypto beginners, while maintaining the self-custodial nature where users control their private keys. The interface remains as simple as regular chat, making it an ideal gateway for mainstream adoption.
Earn Feature and Future Plans
The new "Earn" feature enables users to generate yield simply by holding Toncoin. While details such as APR and minimum holding amounts are yet to be disclosed, Telegram plans to introduce USDT yield and a loyalty program for TON holders later this year. Andrew Rogozov, CEO of The Open Platform, stated: "With the current update, Wallet now operates as a fully-fledged crypto platform within Telegram while remaining as simple and accessible as ever. We also plan to implement a loyalty program specifically for toncoin holders to further boost the adoption of the TON Ecosystem."
Strategic Significance
With 950 million monthly active users, Telegram’s foray into digital finance positions it as a potential gateway for mainstream crypto adoption. The blockchain initiatives have already contributed to Telegram’s recent profitability, validating the strategic role of crypto integrations. As the TON ecosystem gains traction globally, this wallet upgrade reinforces Telegram’s commitment to becoming a one-stop platform for communication and financial services.
