Tesla has maintained its Bitcoin holdings unchanged in the first quarter of 2024, according to the electric car maker's latest balance sheet disclosed on Monday. The company reported net digital assets of $184 million, the same figure as in the fourth quarter of 2022. Tesla previously clarified that its digital assets consist primarily of Bitcoin.
Balance Sheet Details and Cost Accounting
The $184 million book value stems from Tesla's initial $1.5 billion Bitcoin purchase in Q1 2021. In Q2 2022, the firm sold approximately 75% of its holdings, a move Elon Musk attributed to liquidity concerns related to COVID-19 lockdowns in China. Despite the sell-off, Tesla retained about 11,509 BTC. At the current Bitcoin price of roughly $64,735, the market value of these coins exceeds $745 million.
The discrepancy between book value and market value arises from Tesla's use of the impairment accounting model for digital assets. Under this model, assets are recorded at purchase cost and written down if prices fall, but cannot be written back up when prices recover. As a result, the balance sheet reflects a conservative valuation far below the actual market worth.
On-Chain Data Confirms Holdings
Crypto analytics firm Arkham has traced Tesla's Bitcoin to 68 distinct addresses, confirming the company holds 11,509 BTC. This on-chain evidence aligns with the financial disclosure, providing additional transparency to investors.
In addition to Bitcoin, Tesla accepts Dogecoin (DOGE) for certain merchandise, though the company has disclosed that its DOGE holdings are "not material." Musk personally owns "some" Bitcoin, Ether, and Dogecoin, as he has stated in past interviews.
Musk on SpaceX Holdings and Crypto Token Policy
Elon Musk recently revealed that his aerospace company SpaceX also holds "a bunch of Bitcoin." However, the billionaire stressed that he does not spend much time thinking about cryptocurrencies. In November 2023, he explicitly stated that none of his companies will ever create a crypto token. Despite this, he remains open to increasing Tesla's Bitcoin holdings in the future, saying the company is "certainly open" to doing so when liquidity conditions permit.
The steady holding strategy comes as institutional adoption of Bitcoin accelerates following the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in early 2024. Market participants will be watching closely to see if Tesla makes any moves to increase its exposure in the coming quarters.
