Tether has released its Bitcoin mining operating system, MOS (Mining OS), as open-source software. Chief executive Paolo Ardoino said on Feb. 3 that the platform is now fully open source, with the stated goal of making mining infrastructure easier to run for operators ranging from home users to industrial-scale facilities.
A single interface for hardware, energy, and site operations
The software was presented as open source on Feb. 2 during the Plan ₿ Forum in San Salvador. MOS is built as a modular platform for managing and automating Bitcoin mining infrastructure through one interface. Operators can track hardware performance, energy consumption, cooling systems, and site activity from the same dashboard. Its structure also allows features to be customized through separate components tied together by a shared system.
Tether says MOS runs locally instead of depending on centralized servers. It uses encrypted peer-to-peer networking so devices can communicate directly, a design the company says improves privacy and reliability. The system is intended to work across a broad range of hardware, from lightweight devices used in small setups to large deployments running thousands of machines.
Apache 2.0 release and a Mining SDK in the pipeline
MOS has been released under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing users to use, modify, and distribute the software freely. That matters for both miners and developers. Tether is also preparing a companion Mining SDK, which is meant to let developers build custom tools and extensions on top of the platform. The company said the framework will be finalized with input from the open-source community.
The product is positioned as more than a monitoring tool. For smaller operators, it could serve as an alternative to subscription-based management software. For larger mining firms, the same framework can be used to coordinate operations across multiple sites. The focus of this release is software infrastructure, not mining hardware ownership.
Tether targets reliance on proprietary mining platforms
By open-sourcing MOS, Tether is trying to reduce the industry’s dependence on proprietary mining tools such as Hive OS and Foreman, which often charge recurring fees. If adoption expands, smaller operators could gain more room to manage costs and narrow part of the operational gap with large public mining companies.
The move fits into Tether’s broader push into Bitcoin infrastructure. The company has expanded its role in network support and backed mining projects centered on operational efficiency and renewable energy. The report notes that Tether scaled back some mining operations in late 2025 because of rising energy costs, but the MOS release is focused on software development rather than direct hardware exposure. Tether has described the project as a long-term investment in decentralized infrastructure.
Bitcoin reserves keep growing alongside the mining push
Tether’s direct Bitcoin exposure has also increased. Since 2023, the company has allocated part of its profits to buying Bitcoin and has treated the asset as a strategic reserve. By early 2026, Tether held around 96,185 BTC, worth more than $8 billion at the time, making it one of the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holders.
Mining costs remain high, and operating a mining fleet is still complex. Against that backdrop, Tether is using an open-source approach to push into the mining software layer, with MOS aimed at lowering software barriers and opening a wider path for collaboration on mining tools and standards.
