Ticketmaster, the world's leading event ticketing platform, announced on March 27 the launch of a “token-gated sales” service that enables fans to unlock concert ticket purchase opportunities by holding specific non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) is the first artist to pilot the service, allowing holders of its “Deathbats Club” NFT collection early access to tickets for shows in Los Angeles and New York City.

Avenged Sevenfold Leads the Way

Avenged Sevenfold previously sold a collection of 10,000 NFTs called “Deathbats Club,” which serve as membership passes and grant exclusive benefits. Through the new service, Deathbats Club holders were able to purchase tickets before the general public. Ticketmaster worked closely with A7X and its technology partner Bitflips to develop the functionality. “Ticketmaster built and launched the token-gated service for A7X to provide their fan community with first access to tickets for upcoming shows,” the company stated in a press release. David Marcus, Ticketmaster’s EVP of Global Music, explained: “This allows artists to get special access and rewards to specific fans they want to super-serve. Artists like Avenged Sevenfold are using Web3 and NFTs to build deeper relationships with their fans, and we’re proud to help foster that connection through live events.”

Technical Implementation and Compatibility

The token-gated sale service is built on the Ethereum blockchain and supports popular Web3 wallets such as MetaMask and Coinbase. Ticketmaster noted that the system verifies NFT ownership on-chain before granting access to the ticket purchase queue. This marks the company's latest step into blockchain technology; in August 2022, Ticketmaster disclosed a partnership with the Flow blockchain. The firm emphasized that this is one of several “tech solutions that artists can use to get their tickets to their fans.” While Ticketmaster had previously experimented with NFT commemorative ticket stubs, the new service elevates NFTs from souvenirs to functional access keys.

Impact on the Ticketing Industry and Future Outlook

The introduction of token-gated ticketing represents a significant shift in how event access can be managed. By tying ticket privileges to on-chain assets, artists can reward their most dedicated supporters while potentially reducing scalping and secondary market price gouging. The model also offers greater transparency and verifiability compared to traditional pre-sales based on mailing lists or credit card holders. However, challenges remain: the volatility of NFT markets, the learning curve for non-crypto-native fans, and the need for widespread wallet adoption could slow mainstream adoption. Ticketmaster views token-gated sales as just one tool in its arsenal, with other solutions such as white-list direct sales and dynamic pricing also available. As more artists explore Web3 fan engagement, NFT-gated ticketing could become a standard feature in the live music ecosystem. What are your thoughts on Ticketmaster’s new NFT-gated ticketing service?
