Community Vote Approves, TON Coin Becomes GRAM
The native token of The Open Network (TON) has officially adopted a new identity. Following a community governance vote held on the Vote platform from June 1 to June 8, 2026, 81.22% of participants supported renaming TON Coin to GRAM, with the ticker switching at 8:00 p.m. UTC on June 15, 2026. No token swap, claim, bridge, or migration is required from holders.
Key Changes Detailed
Starting June 15, the display name changes from Toncoin to Gram, the trading code from TON to GRAM, and the logo is updated accordingly. The trading pair TONUSDT will become GRAMUSDT. Full platform consistency across exchanges, wallets, and explorers is planned for June 22. Projects are advised to display the previous asset name alongside the new one during a three-month transition period to reduce user confusion. Balances, staking positions, NFTs, smart contracts, and DeFi assets carry over automatically.
Why the Rebrand? Returning to Original Vision
This rebranding is not merely cosmetic. Gram was the original token name used in the first white paper of 2018, representing the project's founding vision before Telegram's legal battles with the SEC forced a pause and restructuring under community leadership. The SEC case was eventually settled, with Telegram agreeing to return $1.2 billion to investors and pay an $18.5 million civil penalty. The community rebuilt independently under the Foundation, adopting the Toncoin identity to distance itself from legal history. Now that chapter is closed, the rename becomes step four of the “Make the Project Great Again (MTONGA)” roadmap, reclaiming the blockchain's original identity.
Telegram's Growing Role
The proposal explicitly states that Telegram is becoming the primary driving force behind the change and is now the network's largest validator. The rebrand reflects this alignment, reconnecting the token name to Telegram's original 2018 vision and signaling deeper integration between the TON ecosystem and Telegram's infrastructure.
Market Reaction and Investor Implications
At the time of writing, TON was trading around $1.70, down approximately 3% in 24 hours. The rebrand announcement has not generated sustained buying pressure. History suggests name changes alone rarely drive lasting rallies. This TON news matters more as a signal than a catalyst—it shows a project cleaning up its identity, strengthening governance, and aligning with Telegram's infrastructure roadmap. Investors should watch how GRAM/USDT performs post-June 15 for real market sentiment.
