TRM Labs said in its latest report that the use of artificial intelligence in crypto-related crime increased 40% year over year over the past 12 months, with scam activity driving much of that rise. According to The Block, the firm said crypto hackers are using AI more often for vulnerability analysis, social engineering attacks and intrusion efforts. The report also pointed to a record number of hacking incidents in 2026. In the first half of the year, digital asset hacks reached 201 cases, the highest level on record. TRM Labs said roughly 75% of losses came from just 4% of incidents, showing how a small share of attacks accounted for most of the damage. It added that North Korea-linked activity caused about $600 million in losses, equal to 61% of total losses in the first half. TRM Labs said AI has not created entirely new forms of crime, but it has lowered barriers for attackers and expanded the scale at which operations can be carried out.
