Trump posts AI videos claiming Kharg Island was destroyed, while U.S. military says strike hit Larak Island

U.S. President Donald Trump posted two AI-generated videos on Truth Social on Sunday night and wrote that Iran’s Kharg Island had been "blown to pieces." The videos showed missiles striking oil fields, storage tanks, and port facilities, followed by explosions.

There is no evidence, however, that the U.S. military actually hit Kharg Island. U.S. Central Command said American forces carried out a "limited and precise" strike on Sunday against Iranian Revolutionary Guard units responsible for mine-laying operations. The stated target was Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz, and the strike was meant to remove an imminent threat to commercial shipping and civilian vessels.

Kharg Island and Larak Island are far apart. Kharg Island, located deep in the Persian Gulf, is one of Iran’s main oil export hubs. It is still unclear whether the AI videos posted by Trump were produced by his team, and it cannot be confirmed whether he confused Larak Island with Kharg Island.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later said it launched ballistic missiles at two U.S. bases in Jordan. Jordan said its air defense systems intercepted eight missiles and that there were no casualties.

On Monday, Hamid Bovard, chief executive of Iran’s National Oil Company, said oil operations on Kharg Island had not stopped, rejecting Trump’s earlier post claiming that the island’s key oil hub had been destroyed.
