World Liberty Financial, or WLFI, has delayed a planned token sale tied to a Maldives resort development backed by the Trump brand. The token had been scheduled for launch next year and was meant to give investors exposure to returns from a development loan connected to the resort, but the sale was postponed after the Iran conflict disrupted travel to the area.
According to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, the delay stems from pressure on regional tourism flows. The report says the conflict affected Middle East airspace and transfer routes, while some travelers grew more cautious about flying through hubs such as Dubai or Doha.
RWA plan hits a real-world obstacle
The resort token is part of WLFI’s broader real-world asset, or RWA, strategy. In February, WLFI turned to RWA platform Securitize to help convert loan interests related to the resort development into a digital token that could trade on-chain.
WLFI has signaled ambitions beyond property-linked products. The source says the project had also expressed interest in tokenizing commodities such as oil and natural gas.
On-chain structure does not remove geopolitical exposure
The cash flow behind the token comes from a physical resort in the Indian Ocean that depends heavily on tourist arrivals. Once the Iran conflict began to affect airspace access and connecting flights, expectations for visitor traffic weakened. That, in turn, put pressure on expected rental income and revenue at the resort, reducing the token’s appeal.
The episode shows a simple point for RWA markets: moving an asset onto a blockchain does not insulate it from geopolitical risks in the physical world. If the underlying business is hit, the token linked to that business can be affected as well.
WLFI remains under political scrutiny
The report also returns to WLFI itself. The project has been described as the Trump family’s main vehicle in the crypto sector and has repeatedly drawn scrutiny over claims that political influence is being used for private gain. The source lists token issuance, purchases of the TRUMP meme coin, and reports about seeking a national trust bank charter as examples that have fueled those questions.
Two points now stand out in the near term. If the Iran conflict continues to affect tourism and aviation, the resort token’s launch could be pushed back again. Separately, WLFI’s RWA strategy may shift toward other assets if this single project remains stalled, leaving its earlier commodity tokenization plans as a key area to watch.
