Techub News reported, citing CryptoBriefing, that Trump has nominated former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Jay Clayton to serve as Director of National Intelligence. Clayton would replace Tulsi Gabbard, who is scheduled to leave the position on June 30, 2026.
Clayton’s SEC Tenure Tied Him Closely to Crypto Regulation
Clayton served as SEC chair from 2017 to 2020. During that period, he treated most ICOs as unregistered securities sales, while also making clear that Bitcoin was not a security. Those positions placed Clayton at the center of key regulatory discussions involving crypto assets.
Clayton currently serves as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. The report noted that whoever succeeds him after his departure will also influence the office’s enforcement priorities for crypto-related cases. As a result, the personnel shift connects both national intelligence leadership and the enforcement direction of an office involved in crypto cases.
