U.S. President Donald Trump said the country’s debt burden, which has topped $40 trillion, has been around for 35 years and can be addressed through growth. He said the U.S. is now experiencing very strong growth and that the issue will be easy to solve. Trump also denied asking Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to intervene in the bond market, saying “absolutely not.” He described Bessent as a very capable person with a good instinct for bonds and interest rates. Asked whether he had discussed additional intervention steps after Treasury yields moved higher, Trump said the ultimate intervention tool is the military and “it is used when necessary.”

U.S. President Donald Trump said the country’s debt problem, after federal debt topped $40 trillion, has been around for 35 years and should be solved through growth.

He said the U.S. is now seeing very strong growth and that the debt issue will be easy to fix.

Asked whether he had told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to intervene in the bond market, Trump denied it, saying “absolutely not.”

Trump also called Bessent a “very capable person” and said Bessent himself wanted to take related action, adding that he has “a very good instinct” for bonds and interest rates.

When asked whether he had discussed additional intervention measures with Bessent after U.S. Treasury yields rebounded, Trump replied: “The ultimate intervention is our military, and we use it when we need to.”
